Cast of ‘Black Panther’ Graces The Cover of Essence Magazine
Black Panther mania is thriving, the stars of the highly anticipated Marvel movie have been selected for the March 2018 cover of Essence magazine.
Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Forrest Whitaker, Letitia Wright and director Ryan Coogler all sat down with the magazine to discuss about why this African nation feels so critical to what’s happening now in today’s society.
Gurira speaks about her personal affinity for the film, telling the magazine how “the idea of creating a scenario where you’re seeing very powerful, empowered Africans is really thrilling to me, something my heart, soul, and spirit yearned to see.”
Director Ryan Coogler also spoke with Essence about his experiences with being in control in this historic film, admitting that “I had really been studying the effects of colonization and the African Diaspora, specifically as it relates to African-Americans and Africans, and what I hit on was this concept of what it means to be African. I pitched that to the studio as a main theme of exploration, and they were totally interested, which is, to their credit, really cool.”
Coogler’s vision is far different from Marvel’s initial idea of a James Bond-esque geopolitical thriller. Thanks to Coogler’s creativity and perception, the setting of the movie takes place in the fictional country of Wakanda, which was designed to appear untouched by colonial invaders. The movie demonstrates a fantasized look at what Africa could have looked like if it had not been invaded by Europeans.
