Coachella 2018 Has Hit a Record High with Female Artists on the Bill
This year’s Coachella lineup features a record number of female performers, which is more than good news because the festival’s “female problem” in previous years has not only caused a lot of controversy, but has been well-documented as well.
However, each year Coachella has slowly increased the number of women in its lineup in response to the backlash. This year sees the most significant increase in numbers, up to 33 percent female artists from a past high of only 25 percent.
It’s no secret that this is not exclusively a Coachella problem, it’s been an issue for all music festivals. Not only do men dominate all festival lineups, but the likelihood of women appearing more as the festival grows, shrinks.
Last year, Lady Gaga was the second female headliner ever in the history of the festival. Bjork is the only other female headliner that Coachella has seen, making an appearance in both 2002 and 2007. Despite having canceled on Coachella last year due to her pregnancy, Beyonce is set to headline the festival this year on April 14 and 21. This makes Beyonce the first woman of color to ever headline the highly anticipated festival and the third woman overall.
Some of the first-time [at Coachella] female artists you must check out while there are: Alina Baraz, Jorja Smith, Kali Uchis, Kittens, Cardi B and of course, Queen Bey! But definitely check out other female performers like Sza, Alison Wonderland, and HAIM.
