The San Francisco 49ers quarterback protest all began in August when he sat during the national anthem of the third preseason game of the year for the 49ers. His simple message came across loud and clear and since then many athletes from different sports have come forward and followed Kaepernick’s protest.
kaepernick’s cover story was written by Time’s senior writer, Sean Gregory. The magazine spoke with different athletes of the sport from different teams ranging from Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins, New England Patriots defensive back Devin McCourty, and Cleveland Browns legend Jim Brown. “We’re not doing this made-up thing to get attention,” said Jenkins. “Real lives are being lost. Real communities are being affected. The negativity comes from people’s unwillingness to digest the hard truth.” This is a well-deserved cover for the quarterback. Congrats, Colin Kaepernick!
This is the way social media responded to Time’s latest cover of the athlete:
Kaepernick is a game changer.
With Kaepernick on the cover of @TIME I think it's safe to say that "stick to sports" will never be the same again.
