At the start of Super Bowl LII, the birds made their way onto the field while Philly’s own Meek Mill’s “Dreams and Nightmares” blasted from the speakers. Take it from this east coast girl, from right outside of the city of brotherly love, this song is Philly’s personal national anthem! When that beat drops anywhere in the city you better know at least the first verse by heart of you will stick out worse than Elton John at a Migos concert.

You could even go as far as to say Meek is the unofficial team mascot. The Eagles have in a way adopted the track that they say gave them “extra juice” before games. “It just gets us going. It gives us good energy. Just a little extra juice.” defensive end Derek Barnett told NFL.com.”Meek, you know, he’s locked up right now,” Barnett added.”So we have to hold the city down for him.”

Mill was sentenced to two to four years in prison after violating the terms of his probation. However, there has been much controversy surrounding the sentencing, including an allegedly biased judge and court officials requesting bride money. Unfortunately, Philly’s most popular rapper’s attorneys are still fighting for his freedom, so he could only watch his home team get their first championship title from prison. That didn’t take his joy though!

In a statement given to NBC‘s John Clark Meek said ” Last night, I felt especially proud to be from the great city of Philadelphia. All the heart that the Eagles showed in winning the Super Bowl has given the best fans in the world real hope and inspiration and I’m truly humbled. I wish my current situation was different, and that I could be with my brothers on that team, and the other Eagles fans, in celebrating this once-in-a-lifetime experience. But I have faith that truth and justice will win out in the end.”

Philly is standing behind their own with many sporting “Free Meek Mill” Eagles jerseys in solidarity and in the true spirit of brotherly love.
