The hit HBO series The Sopranos is about to come to the big screen with a prequel. New Line Entertainment has brought the rights to the screenplay currently titled, The Many Saints of Newark. The scene is set in the era of the 60s in Newark, NJ. At the height of racial tension between Black Americans and Italians, particularly between the gangsters of each group. The script was written by show creator David Chase and ‘The Sopranos’ writer Lawrence Konner.

Many die-hard fans are thrilled at the news of the expansion to The Sopranos’ franchise. The show had a groundbreaking run from 1999-2007. Winning over 21 Emmy Awards, 5 Golden Globes, and Peabody Awards. A few of the series’ regulars will make an appearance in the film. No word on any recasting for ‘The Sopranos’ lead role Tony Soprano being recast, as James Gandolfini passed away in 2013.

Warner Bros Pictures Group chairman Toby Emmerich seems excited for the prequel saying “David is a masterful storyteller and we, along with our colleagues at HBO, are thrilled that he has decided to revisit and enlarge, the Soprano universe in a feature film.” There is no set release date or plot yet for the movie but with the cult, following of the show, there is no doubt it will be a success.
