Twitter Finally Doubles Character Limit for Everyone
Now you can all really speak your mind.
After testing its plan to double tweet word counts with select users, Twitter has officially rolled out the change to all users, bringing the new max total to 280.
Twitter’s decision to implement the new feature was based on a “cramming” issue, where English-speaking users where unable to fit their complete thoughts into a single tweet, resulting in extended editing time. According to the site, 9% of English tweets hit the character limit, and implementing the new limit brought that down to 1%. For those worrying that their timeline will soon fill up with bloated tweets, Twitter asserts that once the novelty wears off, approximately 5% of Tweets surpassed 140 characters, and only 2% went over 190 characters.
